On Saturday, November 19th, ULI Toronto brought together committed Councillors, Planners, Developers, Academics, Transit leaders, and Legal experts to the launch of the Urban Leadership Program, led by former Toronto Chief City Planner, Paul Bedford.
There was a great energy throughout the Saturday program launch that marked the opening chapter to a great journey ahead. A distinguished volunteer team from both the public and private sector walked the Bloor-Dundas West area which will serve as the case study for the mid-career ULI professionals from the city building industry. Their assignment over the 7 month program is to develop a workable community plan for this area of the city.
ULI’s unique approach to community collaboration and professional development continues to create the foundation for the future responsible growth of our communities. During the brief introductions, it was apparent this accomplished cohort of leaders has the right tools and passion for learning and community building.
Hearing the struggles and hopes of the community first hand from the resident groups set a great tone as to importance of the work we do beyond our own area of expertise. Even improvising around the rain and cold provided a great opportunity to hear from a large area employer and how their challenges have some common ground with the resident group. The resident group reminded us that community is not just built form and regulatory plans. Community is heavily connected to the senses: from open sight lines to industrial smells, to train sounds, to the vibrant feel of spot gardens, to the fresh taste of cafes and breweries.
There is a lot of hard work ahead, but we look forward to working with everyone to develop this premiere leadership program to become one of ULI’s most impactful outreach initiatives in creating and sustaining thriving communities.
