Union Station is Toronto’s busiest downtown transit hub and an important historic landmark, but after years of neglect this Grand Dame was beginning to show her age. Yet that will all change in 2016 when Torontonians will witness her rebirth after a $665-million redevelopment that includes increased access points, a grand Italian-style piazza and what is believed to be Canada’s largest green roof. The new Union is envisioned as much more than just a welcome mat to transit and the PATH: informed by intensive demographic studies it will be a destination boasting a wide variety of restaurants, shops and services that will put it on the same stage as Grand Central Station and other iconic rail palaces.
