Broadening the Affordable Housing Discussion
Are current affordable housing supply policies, primarily focused on increased zoning, accelerated approvals and reduced taxes, broad enough or properly focused enough to address this complex challenge?
Join ULI Toronto for our third annual five-part webinar series as we seek expand our understanding of the affordable housing crisis and a broader set of ideas address it.
1.) MONDAY, NOVEMBER 18: 12:00PM - 1:00PM
CAN UP-ZONING BACKFIRE?
Author Patrick Condon (Broken City) explores this and a broader set of questions and themes that point to how the unintended (or intended) consequences of increased zoning to increase housing supply and affordability isn’t working – here in Canada or across the global anglosphere.
This session offers a contrarian perspective to the prevailing view that removing the obstacles of zoning, taxes and charges are the key barriers to housing affordability - but rather are the drivers of land value inflation and spiralling housing costs.

Patrick Condon, Chair, Urban Design, and Professor, Landscape Architecture, UBC

Will purpose-built rental become Toronto's dominant building typology once again, fueled by patient capital and long-term returns? Or will the condo market rebound to reclaim its former dominance?
