Interest in building with mass timber is increasing but not well understood.

There are environmental advantages to building with timber as it has considerably lower carbon cost than reinforced concrete, steel or masonry. Additionally, there is evolving evidence that mass timber buildings have higher levels of wellbeing, concentration, and productivity for occupants.

Planning, designing and building a mass timber building is radically different than a conventional structure. Understanding how it is different, advantages, constraints, timelines, risks etc. are key to market adoption in order to realize the benefits. This session is designed to be a master class by Bernhard Gafner that will provide attendees with an intimate knowledge of what it means to plan, design, procure and construct a mass timber building. Following Bernhard’s presentation, there will be a moderated question period featuring local experts: Michelle Xuereb, Director of Innovation, Quadrangle and Mike Yorke, President, Carpenters District Council of Ontario.
