The 6th annual ULI Toronto Summer Social moved east this year to a location in one of the city’s newest neighbourhoods, the Canary District. Situated between Cherry St. and Bayview Ave. on Front St., Canary District was first occupied by athletes during the 2015 Pan Am Games. Developed by Dundee Kilmer and constructed by EllisDon Ledcor, the neighbourhood has since been transformed to accommodate both residential and commercial tenants. The event was held in a vacant tenant space and the raw space was transformed into a social and networking experience.
Over 600 people registered for an opportunity to meet like-minded individuals from across sectors and to reconnect with colleagues. Professionals both young and seasoned from a variety of occupations including developers, planners, architects, project managers, engineers, investors, designers, public officials, real estate brokers, lawyers, academics and students were in attendance.
The July 14 event was put together with the help of architectsAlliance (presenting sponsor), EllisDon Ledcoor PAAV Inc. (terrace sponsor), Beanfield Metroconnect (bar Sponsor), Dream Kilmer (location sponsor), Spring Reality Inc. Brokerage (event sponsor) A special thanks to these sponsors for making this incredibly successful event possible!
The Social, split between a beautiful patio with views to west of downtown Toronto and indoor area, featuring an interactive art installation by architectsAlliance, history on the Canary District, and more. Two food trucks, Melt Down Cheesery and Gourmet Gringos, were on hand to make sure no one left feeling hungry.
The event also presented attendees with an opportunity to see the Canary District’s evolution a year after the Pan Am Games. In its planning for the development, Dundee Kilmer expressed a preference for local retail tenants and wanted to limit the number of large franchises. The developer worked with Live Work Learn Play on retail programming to produce a healthy neighbourhood feel with vibrant character. You won’t find many large national chains popping up in the area in the near future. The Canary District also includes affordable rental units, condos, a new YMCA and a 500-bed George Brown College student residence.
Part-way through the Summer Social, a sudden and furious rainfall left everyone on the patio a little damp, and those inside became quite cozy for a brief period. The sun quickly returned with great weather for the remainder of the evening. The event carried on well into the night, showing all the usual signs of a successful gathering.
