As an industry with access to some of the most highly prized land in Canada, we have an opportunity to collaborate with Indigenous nations to build better communities and a greater understanding of land developers’ and Indigenous peoples’ roles in land stewardship, place making and place keeping, and economic opportunities for Indigenous peoples.
We are firmly on this path through our educational programming, our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Reconciliation Council, and an inaugural workshop series cohosted with Shared Path Consultation Initiative, Allied, and Westbank to advance education, engagement, and economic reconciliation more deeply with senior industry executives of 33 organizations.
Through these initiatives, ULI Toronto offers a platform for the Truth shared by Indigenous peoples, and for promising practices of Indigenous-non-Indigenous collaboration in line with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Call to Action #92 for Corporate Canada.

The Urban Land Institute Toronto (ULI Toronto), in partnership with the Shared Path Consultation Initiative, has published “Answering the Call to Action 92: A Guide for Truth and Reconciliation in Corporate Responsibility and Land Development”, the first sector-specific framework in Canada to guide the real estate and land development industry on a meaningful path toward Truth and Reconciliation.

Video recording of the ground-breaking event ULI Toronto and Aird & Berlis hosted on November 13, 2025 on First Nations-led Real Estate Development. Capital markets and real estate development attendees heard how local Treaty Holder Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN) and its business corporation MCBC are drawing inspiration from Vancouver’s Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) and its Nch’ḵay̓ Development Corporation, whose landmark Sen̓áḵw project has attracted major investment from OPTrust, one of Canada’s largest pension funds. The sold-out event featured opening and closing remarks from MCFN Chief Claire Sault and Councillor Jesse Herkimer, and a panel moderated by Aird & Berlis’ Scott Smith with panelists Mindy Wight, Nch’ḵay̓ Development Corporation; Umair Raza, OPTrust, Jon Davey, Scotiabank, and Warren Sault, Mississaugas of the Credit Business Corporation.
Article by Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN) and Aird & Berlis on structuring Indigenous-developer partnerships in the GTA. This came out of the conversation Aird & Berlis partner Scott Smith moderated with MCFN Councillor Larry Sault as part of ULI Toronto’s Public Sector Speakers Series.
