The Urban Land Institute (ULI) Toronto’s 2018 Symposium will take the industry out of the convention centre and across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 1, 2018 (Toronto) – How is the GTA’s diversity shaping the built environment? What challenges and opportunities lie ahead for high-rise living in Toronto? Is it possible to reconcile the interests of development and heritage preservation? Will technology and access to data really improve our urban fabric?
On November 7th, city builders from across the private and public sectors in the GTA will convene for ULI Toronto’s 2018 Symposium that will celebrate and define Toronto’s urbanism and address some of the unique challenges the development industry faces at the intersection of rapid growth and political uncertainty.
This year, Symposium attendees will engage in real-world analysis on the future of Toronto as they hit the streets to meet with expert panelists at landmark projects across the GTA. From Toronto’s laneways to downtown Markham, full-day bus tours have been created to explore the contemporary tensions and innovative approaches in technology, immigration, mobility, vertical living and built form, which will shape the future of our city as a global and diverse city-region.
“Toronto is in the midst of an unprecedented crisis of its own success. As more people and more industries pour in, our housing prices surge and inequality grows. It is essential for the real estate industry, urbanists, city-builders and all of us to find solutions for ensuring our city and region remain affordable, liveable, creative and inclusive. We need to take a hard look at where we’re at and where we need to go,” says Richard Florida, University Professor in the University of Toronto’s new School of Cities and author of The Rise of the Creative Class and The New Urban Crisis, who will kick off the Symposium with a keynote address at Evergreen Brick Works.
ULI Toronto’s 2018 Symposium will lay the groundwork for a larger international spotlight on Toronto on the horizon: In 2020, ULI Toronto will host 3,000 of the most influential urbanists across North America’s real estate and land development sectors for ULI’s Annual Spring Meeting.
“The 2020 Spring Meeting will be another opportunity to tell the world that we are not just any city. Rather, Toronto is a beacon city for how urbanism can work for all,” says Richard Joy, Executive Director of ULI Toronto. “The road to that convention starts here.”
