Brexit, Donald Trump, and Rob Ford. The Global Zeitgeist of the Future?

Recent global context suggests that the rise and enduring strength of Ford Nation (which spills well beyond Toronto’s borders) is representative of broadening unrest within western democracies where too many feel that they are outside of the institutions that are shaping our future and the opportunities afforded by it. Irrational or not, these populist expressions speak to a need to improve our public dialog relating to matters affecting the economy, social inclusion, climate and quality of life. And this is true whether the focus is the European Union, the presidency … Read More

Member Profile: Les Klein, Quadrangle Architects

By Cyril Tomlinson                 For Les Klein, it wasn’t always about devoting his life to urban development, much less in the City of Toronto. In fact, when he first arrived at the famed Massachusetts Institute of Technology it was to study as a theoretical mathematician. Before long, with a little help from an introduction to architecture class, it became clear that a career in architecture and urban development was more suited to the professed lover of cities. From a young age, Les was fascinated by the makeup … Read More

Event Recap: Weston Project Groundbreaking

Why I Left Bike Share

In just over 2-hours I became what I am certain is Toronto’s Bike Share program’s shortest-term annual member. Such was the recent frustration I experienced in becoming a member of this essential service on a day I most needed to use it. My ordeal began with my attempt to sign up using my iPhone. After several failed attempts I noticed a message advising that signing up on smart phones is often challenging and that I should use a computer (or tablet) instead. Really? Undaunted, I eventually succeeded in signing up … Read More
