There is nowhere near enough housing that meets the needs of Canadians of all ages and abilities. What more can the real estate industry do to respond to the needs and opportunities for more accessible housing?

The Accelerating Accessibility Coalition presents The Education & Awareness Session to assist home builders in accelerating their accessibility journey. ULI Toronto serves as the Coalition secretariat. Delivered by AccessNow, a founding Coalition Member, the session will share the fundamentals of accessibility, the social and business case for accessibility, and how to foster a culture of disability allyship and awareness.

Facilitated by Maayan Ziv, Founder & CEO at AccessNow, experts from the accessibility and real estate community will share their experiences, insights and best practices. Builders will gain perspective, know-how and the motivation to move on this unprecedented market need and opportunity.

For more information about the Coalition and how your organization can join as a member, please contact [email protected]

    The half-day session will cover:
    Disability Awareness 101
Let’s reframe how we think about disability. We will introduce terminology, provide a framework, and highlight some of the unconscious bias baked into our world. Learn about models of disability, principles of ableism and how to be an ally for the disability community.

The Social and Business Case for Accessible Design

Disability accounts for 22% of the population in Canada. This large and dynamic group has untapped buying power. We will explore how human-centered design and usability are integral to serving this market. Learn why investing in accessibility makes good business sense.

The Fundamentals of Built Environment Accessibility
We will unlearn the practices that lead to barriers in the built environment for people with disabilities. Understanding key principles, drivers and motivators for accessibility is critical to establishing an inclusive development roadmap. Built-in, not bolt-on.

Nothing About Us, Without Us: Building Diverse Teams for Inclusive Outcomes
How do we ensure that people with disabilities are part of the solutions we create? We will learn about the importance of engaging communities with diverse lived experiences. Uncover best practices to effectively and authentically attract people with disabilities for employment, partnership, and collaborative opportunities.

Please note that continental breakfast and light snacks and refreshments will be provided to attendees.

If you acquire accessibility accommodation or have any questions for the event, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected].

If you are an Coalition member but not a ULI Toronto member, please contact [email protected] to register at the ULI member rate.
