    Leveraging Global Events

Global events are often catalysts for urban revitalization and civic infrastructure projects, and these investments live on as legacy projects long after the events end. In 2015, Toronto hosted the Pan-American Games, with 6,123 athletes competing in 360 sports. The Games helped to unlock a formerly industrial area southeast of the city centre, now known as the Canary District. Initially developed as the Athletes Village, this area has since evolved into a vibrant, mixed use, mixed income community. Today, a partnership between Dream Unlimited, Kilmer Group, and Tricon Residential are building over 2,500 new rental housing units including a significant portion that are affordable as well as an Indigenous Hub that will offer a variety of health, education, and employment services for indigenous communities.

Join ULI Toronto for a tour of the Canary District that traces the evolution of the neighbourhood from a former heavy industrial district through the successful execution of the PanAm Village and looking to its future as a successful example of sustainable and adaptive master planning.
