2018-2019

Since the UrbanPlan program was initiated in Toronto last year, members of ULI have been getting it ready to launch during this fall’s regular school semester. As the program progresses, there continue to be opportunities for like-minded individuals to contribute to the discussion around city growth and development through volunteer training. ULI Toronto has trained over 100 volunteers over the past year that we hope will join the workshops as team facilitators and mentors, which will conclude in final team presentations with volunteers acting as city council members.

Thank you to the following schools who ran UrbanPlan in 2018/2019 and the teachers who helped champion this program in their classrooms:

Sir Wilfrid Laurier, TDSB (Gr. 9 AP Geography – Sadhan Hirdaramani) – Fall 2018 & Spring 2019
Forest Hill Collegiate, TDSB (Gr. 11 Marketing – Edward Ketchum) – Fall 2018 & Spring 2019
Loretto Abbey Secondary School, TDCSB (Gr. 9 AP Geography – Howard Cappadocia) – Spring 2019
Harbord Collegiate Institute, TDSB (Gr. 11 Urban Issues – David Ast) – Spring 2019
Central Toronto Academy, TDSB (Gr. 12 Urban Geography – Erin Zawacki) – Spring 2019

We are always looking for more volunteers to get involved with UrbanPlan and help advance ULI’s mission. If you are interested, please contact [email protected] who will provide upcoming opportunities for volunteer training.

RU a Planner – Partnership with Ryerson University

This past year ULI Toronto partnered with Ryerson University to deliver RU a Planner, an organization of graduate students from the School of Urban and Regional Planning that facilitates workshops about urban planning to classrooms across Toronto. Every year during World Town Planning Week, Ryerson partners with City of Toronto planners (and this year ULI!) to give students from grades 6-12 a peek into the work that planners do, while also providing them the opportunity to engage in the decision-making process planners use to tackle complex problems. The following schools participated with this program in 2018/ 2019: Loretto Abbey Secondary School, Harbord Collegiate and Central Toronto Academy!

High School Student Tours

Loretto Abbey Secondary School students had the opportunity to visit the Minto Group corporate office this past March. Agnieszka Wloch, VP of Development shared insight on the home building process – from land acquisition to marketing, sales and construction – to a group of 35 participants. The presentation was followed by a tour of the office and opportunity to hear from speakers in various departments including finance, product development, sustainability and marketing, among others. Thank you to the team at the Minto Group for providing a fun-filled and educational event for the students!
