The revitalization of Toronto’s Alexandra Park community has attracted international recognition, including Urban Land Institute’s 2021 Global Awards for Excellence. This tour will explore the ongoing transformation of the post-war social housing project, and how the revitalization was born out of a community-led vision for a mixed community with different housing types, land uses, and economic opportunities following the ethos of a sustainable community.
As an 18-acre social housing complex in the central city, the redevelopment of the neighbourhood posed a significant opportunity to integrate modern urban design and social housing principles into the redesigned environment, while also requiring significant care to mitigate the potential disruption to existing residents. To this end, the project committed to “zero displacement”, accommodating the needs of all existing residents within the neighbourhood, one of the first major projects in the province to do so.
Join ULI Toronto as we explore the origin story of this unique city -building initiative that has now earned international acclaim.
