GLOBAL ORGANIZATION SEEKS INTERNATIONAL ENTRIES FOR URBAN IDEAS COMPETITION
October 14, 2015
October 14, 2015 . . . Toronto, ON – ULI Toronto, a District Council of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) is seeking entries for ULI Toronto’s second annual Urban Ideas Competition, in partnership with the City of Brampton. This year’s competition is focused on ideas for rejuvenating and reinvigorating the downtowns of former small towns within the Greater Toronto Area, many of which have been transformed into large commuter suburbs.
ULI Toronto is accepting submissions from members of the public along with architects, designers, planners, artists, students and others involved with the development community who are invited to submit visionary ideas or design proposals to re-energize and rejuvenate the downtown core of the City of Brampton.
Entrants to the Urban Ideas Competition should consider issues such as community accessibility, multi-modal transit and infrastructure, natural environment, environment resiliency, sustainability, walkability, intensification, the functionality of public and private spaces, land uses, public entertainment, cultural uses, open spaces and linkages, all-season uses, tourism, funding/feasibility, public art/private art, and public safety, among other important matters.
Entry is open to any potential participant and not limited to design professionals. Submissions by multi-disciplinary teams are encouraged. Anyone can participate as long as the team lead is a ULI member.
A jury panel of well-known industry leaders with expertise in community building and land development will adjudicate the competition. Selected entrants will be showcased in public locations in Brampton, Toronto and online with the winners to be announced at the awards event this Fall on November 24th. Jury panelists are as follows:

2014 Urban Ideas Competition
The 2014 Urban Ideas Competition to reconnect Toronto’s waterfront was a huge success. In addition to Ontario, the 2014 competition received submissions from around the world including British Columbia, Michigan state, and Korea. Submissions were accepted in two categories: an overview of the waterfront between Bathurst and Parliament and a repurposing of the Gardiner Expressway ramp to York Street. With over 200 attendees, the competition highlighted the interest and importance of fostering new ideas in transforming spaces. Furthermore, the competition initiated conversation between transit connectivity, development and the greater public realm. Submissions welcomed opinions from panel judges, including former Chief Planner for the City of Toronto Paul Bedford, who stated that “one thing a city needs is fresh, bold, and interesting new ideas” – a clear mission that ULI strives to achieve each year through the Urban Ideas Competition.
