ULI Toronto announces Richard Joy as New Executive Director and New Advisory Board Leadership

TORONTO (June 19, 2014) – Urban Land Institute (ULI) Toronto announced today the appointment of Richard Joy as the Toronto District Council’s Executive Director. Mr. Joy, an experienced public policy professional, becomes ULI Toronto’s first full-time Executive Director, marking a new stage in the evolution of ULI’s Toronto District Council. ULI is a globally recognized, non-profit research and education organization, with over 32,000 members worldwide representing the entire spectrum of real estate development and land use disciplines.
“Mr. Joy’s unique set of experience and skills will help to advance ULI’s mission to provide leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities” says Mark Noskiewicz, Chair of ULI Toronto. “His appointment facilitates an expanded role for our membership in the development of the rapidly growing Toronto Region towards more livable, transit accessible communities within a dynamic and globally competitive economy.
“Mr. Joy brings 20 years of urban leadership experience to his new role, across municipal and provincial government and the private sector. In his position as Senior Policy Advisor to the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Mr. Joy was the lead advisor on the City of Toronto Act (2006) and key advisor on numerous major legislative reforms, including the Greenbelt Act and the Planning Act. In his private sector government relations consultancy, he has served a wide array of industry clients. Most recently. Mr. Joy has served as Vice President, Policy and Government Relations for the Toronto Region Board of Trade.
“The next several years are a critical watershed moment in the growth of the Toronto Region”, says Mr. Joy. “We must better capitalize on our common vision of a network of livable neighbourhoods and communities and continue to advance the implementation of responsible infrastructure investment through positive leadership and collaboration between public policy makers, industry and our local communities.
ULI Toronto also announced today new Advisory Board leadership. Rob Spanier, Partner & Principal of Live Work Learn Play, will step into the role of Chair, taking over for Mark Noskiewicz. Derek Goring, Vice President of Development for First Gulf, will assume the role of Vice-Chair, Mission Advancement, previously held by Rob Spanier, and Nadia King, Partner at PwC, will take on the role of Treasurer from Frank Magliocco. “We could not be happier with the continued growth and evolution of ULI Toronto. Having our new Executive Director’s start coincide with the renewal of our Advisory Board leadership should initiate a new and exciting chapter for the organization and its impact on local and regional issues” said Noskiewicz.
